500 Push-ups a Day…Why?


This is Part 1 of a series of posts I’ve prepared on how I attempted 500 push-ups a day for 5 months in 2014.

From approximately the end of July 2014 to the end of December 2014, I performed 500 push-ups a day.

Ok, so let me clarify a bit.  It ended up not being quite everyday.  Sometimes, faulty planning prevented me from getting all of them in.  Sometimes I was just too sore to do more.  Also, I have always made Sunday my day of resting from vigorous exercise, so of course I didn’t do push-ups then.

That said, on average, I did 500 push-ups a day for about 3-5 days out of every week.

Why So Many Push-ups?

So why in the world would I be interested in doing so many push-ups?  What was my purpose?

  • To see if calisthenics can build muscle.  From my research, many people say basic calisthenics cannot build muscle.  They say that they’re too easy, and they don’t add enough load to stimulate muscle growth.  However, folks like Herschel Walker have undoubtedly used calisthenics to build impressive physiques as well as significant fitness levels.  Because of that, I wanted to do my own experimentation on myself.
  • To save some time.  Sometimes, no matter how well you plan, you don’t have time to complete full workout sessions.  Especially with a newborn child ;).  I needed something that would allow me to do several quick workouts throughout the day.  Doing push-ups in this manner allowed for that.  You can do push-ups almost anywhere.
  • To break the monotony of my workday.  My day job requires that I sit behind a desk almost 8 hours every single day.  Sometimes, this can be absolutely exhausting.  Coupling that with the news that sitting that long can be detrimental to health, regardless of whether or not you exercise outside of that time, made me know that it’s mandatory for me to move throughout the day…and it’s easy to drop down and get some quick push-ups in at work.

    • Yeah perhaps so! It’s really easy to fit in sets of push-ups, or any calisthenics for that matter, throughout the day.
