Just a Sec Before You Say Grace…

The waiter just brought your food out.  It’s hot, and I know you want to go ahead and say grace so you can eat, but hold on just a second…What kind of food are you about to pray over?

Is it healthy?  And if it isn’t, are you about to ask God to “make it nourishing to your body”?

If you think about it, that is equivalent to asking God to perform some kind of magic on our meals.  “Lord, make this doughnut nourishing to my body.”  “God, please bless this fried pork chop.”

Can we really ask God to make foods healthy that we know are not healthy?

Oh, and another thing…you may have accidentally prayed that way just from praying the same grace over and over out of habit.  I understand because I am definitely guilty:

“Lord, thank you for this food that I’m about to receive for the nourishment of my body…”

Learning those prayers as children is good and all, but do we really mean that prayer now after 20+ years?  How about a different, original prayer this time?  From the heart…

So, to reiterate:

  • Let’s pray appropriately over our food.  If it ain’t healthy, we do not need to ask God to make it so
  • When we pray over our food, let’s say original, mindful prayers with thanks from our hearts, instead of rushing through memorized prayers so that we can eat as quick as possible

(Shout out to my sister-in-law for showing me the picture that I placed in this post)
