About a week or two ago, my wife and I made our own chicken broth.  And to think that not too long ago, I thought that broth was something you could only buy at the store.

It’s really not that hard at all.  If I can do it, you can do it as well.

How to Make Your Own Chicken Broth

What you need:

  • Chicken Bones (the bones you’d usually throw away after eating some chicken…organic is best)
  • Big Crockpot
  • Water
  • Chopped Vegetables (stuff like onions, celery, garlic and carrots)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Mason Jars

Directions

  • Rinse off the bones and place them in the crockpot
  • Add the chopped vegetables
  • Cover the bones and vegetables with plenty of water
  • Set the crockpot to the low cook setting and let it all cook for 24 hours
  • Add a little salt to bring the taste out if you desire.  Not too much, though…you do want it to be healthy

That’s it!  That’s all it takes to make your own chicken broth.  As far as storage is concerned, we put some in the mason jars and placed it in the refrigerator, and we put some in the freezer as well.  We also poured some in cupcake pans, froze it, and put it in freezer bags.

So Why Are YOU Interested in Making Chicken Broth?

I’m glad you asked.  I’m interested in it for several reasons:

  1. Apparently, homemade chicken broth has many more health benefits than store-bought chicken broth.  Check out more details on the health benefits from Wellness Mama’s post.
  2. I asked my mom if my grandma made broth.  She was like, “oh yeah definitely.”  I’m always amazed at the many things our grandparents did that were so beneficial, and that we’ve thrown away because we “know better.”  I love old wisdom, man.
  3. It’s very easy to make
  4. It adds more flavor to foods than plain old water.  My wife and I cook a lot of dried beans throughout each week, and cooking them in broth makes them quite a bit more flavorful.

Are you going to try making your own chicken broth?  Have you already made your own chicken broth before?  Talk to me!
