  • My visualization is my head on Shawn’s body. Pretty scary for him. I was afraid this would be over my head. I walk a lot already. So I’ll try to be more disciplined and do this. I’m not sure about NO coffee. I’ll keep track of how much water I drink on a cold day of not sweeting.

    • Ha, on my body? Makes me feel cool, lol. Yeah, I feel you about the coffee. I’ll say this…I challenge you to do unsweetened coffee and/or tea if you drink it.

And yep, I imagine for folks like you who already have an active lifestyle, some parts of this challenge are going to be pretty easy. Some parts though will probably be challenging (i.e. the coffee stuff).

    • I’m rooting for you Tom. I’m going to have to pour out some orange juice and that will put immense pressure on my soul. I’d think Shawn’s body is a good choice, but I’d have to get used to a new height and that could be a bit tough.

Woo whooo!!!! I’m excited to do this! It’s cold outside so I’m nervous about the walking, but I have to remind myself, it’s only 5 minutes! We can just about to anything for only 5 minutes, right? My father in law walks EVERYDAY rain, sleet, or snow. I can do 5 minutes.

By the way, I’m Veronica. My goals are to develop healthy habits that I actually maintain and be cut with. I’d like to lose a few pounds and look healthier. I happen to be Shawn’s wife, but he constantly reminds me that I get no inside scoop or help just because I’m his wife. I’m experiencing this fresh with everyone else. I look forward to experiencing this journey with all of you.

Lastly, I think we need a unique hashtag that we can use on social media. Anybody have ideas? #ShawnB2BNewMe?

    • Way to go, Veronica.

I’m open to a social media hashtag. Yeah, what does everybody else think?

    • Hello Veronica, I also thought about the cold, but with all this extra weight I have acquired, I don’t think it will be that bad. Drinking water will be no problem, though…minus the 3/4s of orange juice I didn’t get to finish 🙁

  • Welcome, Jan 2018 New Beginning participants! I wish the best for you during your participation, and look forward to hearing what you have to say. Let’s go!

  • I know the hash tag is a good thing but you guys here are about as close as I get to social media.

It has been cold here, 12 degrees a lot of mornings. A few mornings ago it was 7, 13 this morning.

Shawn, I have been loading my coffee with cream. I’ll trying doing only one good cup of black coffee in the morning.

    • Sounds great, Tom. And don’t feel bad about the hashtag stuff…I do have a Facebook and a Twitter account, but I am by no means adept at the art of the hashtag. Seeking help from you guys participating in this thing!

    Good afternoon,
My name is Verna and I’m excited to get this party started. I recently participated in the three day detox and I lost 6 lbs. I’m still motivated to enjoy a healthy journey in 2018. Thanks to this ministry, I’m off to a good start.

I’m Jessica, I attend church with Shawn & Veronica. I’m excited and nervous about doing this, but I want a chnage this year. So I’m gonna give it a try. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

    • Way to go, Jessica…and thanks for joining! Yeah, you got this thing.

  • Hello my fellow participants. Im Banana, Frank, or Andre’ whichever you choose to call me. I’m 29, 6 feet even, and weight around 240 pounds. The body I want to put my face on is…my body from 3 years ago. Once I get there, I guess I can decide on some more advanced goals. I’m mainly using this program as motivation. I perform better when someone expects me to do something, rather than if it’s just me. So, this is perfect.

    Until next time~

Hi! I’m Jessica. I used to avoid health programs and “diets” like the plague. However, I am very much interested in a lifestyle change that I can maintain and I look forward to picking up more knowledge while participating in this program.

My thoughts so far are that I drink water most of the time anyway, however drinking half my body weight is a bit much because it’s cold outside. I will do my best to drink what I can. I’m going to have to build my way up. I’ve been using MyFitnessPal app since last June and recently took a break so I’ll get back on that for my water intake and continue tracking my steps. 🙂 I look forward to the challenge.

    • Excellent, Jessica. Thanks for joining in! I truly hope that you pick up knowledge that will help you on your journey. And yeah, I feel you especially with the ‘diet’ stuff. A lot of diets are either unrealisic or impractical. Hopefully this can be less of a ‘diet’ thing and more of a “lifestyle transformer” as you alluded to in your comment.

  • I’m here! Getting my mind ready to do this. Starting back is always the hardest, but I do think this program will help me. I can see a healthier me easily! Need it to come to life, lol. My first hurdle, drinking half my body weight. Why?!?! Lol

    • Lol, welcome Jene’t! Yeah, drinking that much water is a struggle, especially starting out. Being honest, I still struggle with that a lot. But once your body gets used to it, it’s beneficial in more ways than one. Look forward to hearing back from you at the end of this week!

  • Miss Zelda

    Hello Everyone,
My name is Zelda and I’m going on 58. Time for a new change up in everything. Since I’m over 55, my doctor says I need to loose 30-40 pounds to take the weight off my knees and back. 3-5 pounds come off, then 3 pounds come back!!! Do I look overweight, not really, but I feel it! So I’m guessing, I’m the “New Overweight”…..auuuugggh go figure?? I’m not on any meds other than sinus meds. I don’t have high blood pressure, thyrod issues, diabetes or high cholesterol. How weird is that?? So it’s definitely gotta be what in the world can I eat, to speed up my metabolism without being hungry! So whatever it takes, according to my schedule, I am willing to do! Thanks Shawn and love the hashtags Veronica.

    • Hey, Ms Zelda! Yeah, it’s a blessing that you’re in the health that you’re in…awesome! Thanks for joining the program!

  • I have a Planet Fitness membership but haven’t been in a few months for various reasons, some legitimate and some not. But if I’m going to walk, it’s going to be indoors for now! Today I did the 30 minute circuit and walked for 30 minutes on the treadmill, which is what I was doing when I was going before. It felt great! I read the email instructions this morning as I was drinking my coffee (whoops), and going completely without is a little alarming, especially in this cold weather. But I replaced everything after that with water today, which was a little more difficult than I thought it would be. I’m ready to feel energetic again and get rid of these 10 pounds that keep creeping up. And yes, hashtag would be great 🙂

  • I am excited to start this program and get back to a healthier lifestyle. I normally walk a fair amount during the weekdays thanks to being on a college campus. My real challenge will be drinking enough water throughout the day.

    • Welcome, Carmen! Yeah, being on a college campus is definitely a big help with the walking. Look forward to hearing back from you after you’ve had a week to get used to the water drinking! Don’t worry…I still struggle with that if I’m honest.

  • Welcome back, Melanie! Yeah, Tom is drinking coffee too. What I challenged him to do is to drink the coffee unsweetened, so that can be your challenge as well. And yep, I’m believing you’re gonna show those 10 lbs the door 😉

  • Wow! It’s great to see all of you here. I’m 62 and as I tell people, “I gotta condition”. I like to use that line when it’s convenient. I have had my artificial heart valve for 21 years. A year ago I got a pace maker. A long list of other things I won’t bore you with. It has all been a blessing and made me go hard, appreciate life, and take care of myself.

I’ve lived long enough to see a lot of strong healthy people throw it all away and even kill themselves by various means of unhealthy living and habits and addictions. I’m glad you’re all here. I am trying to continue healthy habits and improve on them.

Friday I lifted 4500 pounds of fire wood, most of it twice. Saturday 3000 pounds twice. I know that doesn’t count, but It’s what you can look forward to being able to do if you take care of yourself. So yesterday I walked an hour. I’ll do it today also up here in LaFayette, in the freezing rain if I have to. For me all the above is the easy stuff. I came up short on water yesterday. I’ll try to pick it up, starting a little earlier today. Coffee, I’ll cut back and no sweetener for now. Eating healthier and more water is the hard part. I have to work on that.

Veronica, you have a blessing and probably a lot of pressure being married to “The Man”. I like your father in law’s habit of walking.

Banana, I like you’re using your own body as your motivational image.

All you, thank you for being here. It is a motivational boost for me.

    Have a blessed day.

    • Y’all…you’ll see soon that Tom is legendary. He’s my former coworker and he’s a true inspiration. Dealt with a lot and still goin’ hard! No excuses. Way to go, Tom.

Hello everyone, this is Bohdana. I’m excited to be a part of this New Beginning Challenge. I participated in the Winter Detox and I want to keep the forward momentum going. My focus is on making lifestyle changes, not simply doing something short-term. My problem in the past has been to incorporate nutrition and fitness at the same time AND maintain those changes. 2018 is a new year so I look forward to this being the year of victory!

    • Welcome again, Bohdana…you’re keeping this thing going!

  • I got my walking in! working on my water 🙁

  • I did not get my walking in today. My paint crew went on strike (wife and grandson). They had good excuses but I had to finish this thing up today, which I just did. I only marginally drank more water than yesterday.

I’m hoping strong dark beer with lots of anti-oxidants offsets the coffee….just one Shawn.

The best thing I did was drink water with breakfast. That is the one meal I have milk with. It was OK. I plan to keep that up. I have been drinking water with all other meals for years, even at restaurants.

BTW Bohdana, Verna, and any one else that did that detox thing, you are tough and strong willed..

All these words of encouragement helps more that you ever know. I am drinking my water, building up on the intake a little more each day. I want to start back slow jogging but right now, I’ve got to work on that action called “walking”. I’ve got to do this y’all!!

    • Building up to it sounds like a good idea to me. Whatever you have to do to get there!

Evening, all. So far so good. I got my walk in – walked 7 minutes in fact! I’m working on my water. I estimate that by 9:00 pm I had probably drank about 60 oz of water. I don’t weigh 120 lbs, so I have a little ways to go. I’m currently working down a 24 oz cup of water, but I am not sure that I should drink too much more lest I be up all night running to the restroom. Looking forward to hearing how everyone does tomorrow!

Oh, and I’m going to just start using the hashtag I proposed #ShawnB2BNewMe. Join me if you’d like!

    • That is my problem. And with different plumbing I got a different issue. I had it worked on 15 years ago and it’s still a lot better than it was. But that is the main reason I don’t drink a LOT of water, unless really sweating. However it’s also another reason to go easy (or not at all) on the coffee.

I’m concentrating on drinking more water earlier in the day. It will do me good I think. Hope everyones day is great. Blessings to all.

This was a great day! I got my walking in today and the water was a breeze. I have a 32 oz water bottle I like to drink from- it really makes it easy to get my water intake in for the day. I like to do three of those a day but I had gotten away from that, this challenge helped me return! Like Veronica, I’m looking forward to tomorrow as well. I hope everyone has a terrific Tuesday!

And thanks Tom M! You sound pretty tough and strong willed yourself :-).

  • Today I did what I call my normal cardio walk. It is only a mile to where I turn around, but it is moderately rough terrain with large rocks to walk over, and 800 feet of elevation gain. It normally takes me an hour round trip.Today with it being wet it took me 1:05. My fastest time up is 26 minutes and 40 seconds. Shawn could do it in 10 or 15 but it’s a workout for me and I get my heart rate maxed out, which still ain’t much, but it does me a world of good.

    • I don’t know, Tom…sounds like something serious!

Morning Everyone! I just wanted to give a quick post to say, let’s keep it up! I fell behind on my water yesterday, but I still drank more than what I had been drinking. I probably had about 20 more ounces to go. This morning I’m off to a good start after having already drank about 28 ounces of warm lemon water. That has replaced my usual cup of green tea because green tea without honey is no fun. I’ve actually enjoyed the lemon water! I plan to get my walk in mid morning. It actually has become a highlight of my day to go take a quick walk.

    • Tom M.

I think lemon would be a good addition to my water now. I woke up with some bronchial stuff going on. I have not been sick in three years, since I retired. I think thats because I’m mostly in woods and not sitting in the room with a 100 people all day. It is building slowly so i’m hoping its a cold. I drank mostly juice today (100% juice, not drink). I was still 26 oz from my quota yesterday but I had added more water each day.

I walked 25 minutes, in the woods, slow and enjoyable. Hopefully I’ll get lucky and miss getting the real crud. This is the first year in MANY I opted not to get a flu shot.

Best wishes to all. Keep good things and drop bad things.

      • Yeah, I hope you’re not coming down with anything, Tom. I agree that lemon added to your water would be a good idea.

It’s settling deep. I don’t know if it’s bacterial or viral, I’m thinking bacterial. I think I’ve got some left over antibiotics??? I didn’t say that.

  • Day 37…I mean Day 5. Im finally up to drinking my 4 x 32oz a day. Hoping no one pokes a hole in me to release it all like a Saturday morning cartoon. The walks are easy, of course. Guess we’ll see what the next week will bring.

        Good afternoon,
I’m asking for prayer for the coming week. My only brother passed yesterday and all I was thinking was I want some good old comfort food to ease this pain. I surprised myself and kept to my regimen and I won. I’m taking my 20 minutes walk after I get home from work. It relaxes me and I shower to relax even more. I’m eating dinner by 6:30 so I’m ready for bed by 9:30- 10:00. I’m excited bout week two. Still trying to drink that 100+ ounces of water. Nothing but water so far. Be blessed and be safe!

        • Oh no, Verna. Sorry to hear about your brother’s passing! You will be in my and my wife’s prayers this evening.

Bravo to you for overcoming the urge to go to comfort foods. That shows true STRENGTH. Keep up the awesome work, Verna.

4.5 hour hike today. Not all of it walking. Some slipping and sliding down the mountain, coming out off-trail. This is steep and very rugged. I rappelled into a pit I with a good friend. It didn’t get above freezing here today. Mostly 27 with wind blowing. Some of it was a little on the brutal side. The cold and the cold kicked my butt.

Yep, I’m still sick. Not sure if I’m better or worse. It is not as bad as full blown flu, but half as bad. Maybe I should not have been out today but I don’t like to find excuses. I felt like the exercise would be good for me. This is an activity me and some close friends do this weekend every year. There are only two of us left willing to do it. I couldn’t back out on my friend who drove up from Lakeland Fl for the punishment we went through on a cold mountain side. The cave we went to was one a very good friend of ours had found. He died a year ago. He was type I diabetic since childhood. He took care of himself and went hard. Age and the disease caught up with him. He would have died years earlier if not for the extreme caving, rock climbing, backpacking, canoing, kayaking and fishing sports he was into. His cholesterol was an embarrassment to me because it was so low. I’m saying all this mainly because I have seen people with major health issues do amazing things. So, You Can Do It Too.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a longer rougher trip If I can pull it off. I think I’m getting too old for some of this.

I hope you all have a blessed Sunday. Mentally prepare for what Shaw is going to do to us.

    • Amazing…what can I say. It makes sense to me, Tom, that you would have friends as driven as you who do what they need to do against ALL odds.

Sooo…. Week 1 recap. Walking: check. I had a hermit day Thursday because I was feeling slightly under the weather. Water… Well… truth be told I would often come up short about 20 oz. I downloaded the plant nanny app to help give me drinking reminders, but I would forget during the day and try to down a bunch of water a night in order to meet my quota.

For the week, the 2 cups green vegetables. I have questions… Breakfast. I’m trying to sort this out. I have a few ideas. I can have a banana and spinach smoothie or a spinach and egg omelet. But… 2 cups of greens before oatmeal? I dunno… Second question. Is that precooked volume? I’m thinking of spinach or kale that wilt up when cooked.

    • Thanks for your questions, Carmen. As far as breakfast, I would say don’t worry about the 2 cups of vegetables before then. I meant for it to only be before lunch and dinner, but forgot to mention that. My wife pointed that out to me as well.

That said, I still think it’s a great idea to incorporate some greens…just don’t worry about 2 cups.

As far as the ‘volume’ question, I would say it depends. If you are eating cooked greens, I would say cooked volume. If it is in raw form like a salad, I would say precooked volume. Hope this helps.

5 hour hike yesterday. 4 hours of that time was hiking, half off-trail looking for new caves. Not very smart. It was freezing again. I’m am sure enough sick now.

Today I’ve got to rest and stay warm, plenty of time to eat vegetables.

    • Gosh, yeah please get that rest in! Some sleep, lemon and garlic should have you back soon.

So after week one, I was not able to meet my water goal, however I was usually about 8oz short. This may be TMI, however, I ran to the restroom way more often than I liked and it honestly became frustrating with the constant interruption. But I stuck in there to try and reach my goal. As far as the exercise I had already previously been tracking my steps so doing the walks helped with that. I go upstairs to the restroom so the water intake helped me get more cardio during the day. 🙂 I was doing my official non-stop walks in the evening but I think I’m going to need to switch to morning as that has worked better for me in the past.

For week two, I wondered the same thing Carmen asked about veggies for breakfast. I have spinach and kale to add to a smoothie, however it’s not two cups. I believe I may do okay for dinner, however lunch is usually my biggest struggle when deciding what to eat. I’m going to have to prep today for the week. Week 2, lets go!

    • Sounds good Jessica…yep, I meant to tell folks to add the two cups of vegetables before lunch and dinner only, so that was my bad. You still did great having only 8 oz to go last week. Keep pushing with that as you add in all of those green vegetables.

      Keep up the good work!

Hello! Week 2 is here and so far so good! Thank you for your well wishes for my mother, she is getting better daily-slowly, but surely. My water intake has continued to be good, exercise went well and the veggies for the day were pretty good. I ended up skipping lunch because I wasn’t hungry and had popcorn as a snack later on. I did incorporate greens into my first meal as well as a green smoothie loaded with veggies. For dinner I had baked chicken, broccoli and rice with onions, bell peppers and carrots. My final snack was an apple. I do have a praise report to share. I tried on a pair of dress slacks I hadn’t worn for a while and they fit! I would like them to be a little bit looser but overall they look nice. I was so excited and pleasantly surprised.

I pray this week is a good one for everyone. Continued prayers for Verna and her family as well as restored health for Tom M. God bless!

My Week 1 Recap: Thanks to my job, I was able to get my walking in without really thinking about it. Drinking water – it was hard trying to reach my goal of 75oz. At 48oz my body was telling me to stop. I won’t push like Shawn said, but I may try to sneak an extra ounce in just to see how I do. Great group here, and I want to try and keep up as much as I can.

My Week 2: Vegetables are not my thing, lol and especially the green ones. I had so many green beans last week, I don’t want to see not a one, lol. But, I will see how a small salad will do me before dinner or for lunch. I didn’t see anything about not adding some grilled meat to it, so I may be alright. I’m a work in progress 🙂 For the walking, I’ll be leaning on Leslie Sansone videos on youtube to get my walk in while I’m at work.

Good luck to everyone this week!

Jene’t, I’ve been using videos also. The extra cold weather isn’t my deal. Although, today is rather nice out.

    Thanks Shawn!

Today was a little rough for me because I got NO sleep last night. I was absolutely exhausted today but had a ton of stuff to accomplish. Thankfully, the Lord gave me that Jesus strength and I made it through…praises! The water and veggies were good again today; although I didn’t drink as much water as I wanted, I did meet my intake requirements. The exercise proved toughest because I had no energy to start the day and then I was off and running getting things done. I didn’t exercise until 10:30 tonight. Hopefully, it will make me really tired and not energize me. I plan to drink a mix of honey lavender tea and chamomile tea before going to bed shortly.

    • Man…hopefully you were able to get rest this past night. Those nights of missed sleep are terrible.

This morning I can finally say I am getting better. I was starting to wonder. I have mostly been in the bed since Monday night. The garlic and lemon….? could have played a part. The only thing it hurt was my breath.

I haven’t done a walk for two days but I’ll be back on that soon. Right now it is 11 degrees with a high predicted of 24. Good time to see the ice in ‘Cool’ places.

I haven’t eaten a lot. I did have a good cup of salad before soup. Today I plan salad, celery, and english peas. I can do this veggie thing. I’m glad Shawn didn’t fire us water intake violators.

Bohdana, I hope you are getting that needed sleep. It’s good you were able to still go when you needed to. Blessings to all.

    • LOL, yeah I’m not going to fire anybody 🙂

And yes, the garlic can definitely put a hurting on the breath, but it’s amazing for the immune system. God gave us these various things to take care of ourselves…it’s amazing.

Lol!! The breath comment was funny. I’m glad to hear you’re doing better!

Lunch worked out great. I steamed a cup of fresh green beans with garlic sliced real thin. It was a much better way to eat the garlic. I also had a large cup of salad. That is all I had. I got a nice 10 minute walk in, I’m about to take another walk before dinner.

Dinner will be green beans, bell pepper, and salad. Then venison burgers.

Hey all, I know how to get to the community page but I’m not getting the assignment for the week. I checked me spam and it’s not there either.

Thanks for the encouragement and well wishes Tom; I appreciate it. I did sleep well that night but the following night, not so much. A huge monkey wrench was thrown in my plans so I was going nonstop for two days. I was exhausted yesterday so I totally crashed last night.

Today, I decided to really focus back on my water and veggies. I had a large salad and green smoothie for lunch and dinner was rice with mixed veggies, baked chicken, broccoli and cabbage. And I reached my goal of drinking a gallon of water today! I felt dehydrated from these past two days of only drinking 60-64 oz, so I knew I needed to focus in today.

And I exercised for 25 mins. It was a good day!

Btw…how are you doing Shawn? What was your day like nutrition and fitness wise?

    • Thanks for asking, Bohdana. This morning, I had a couple of hard boiled eggs for breakfast. Was supposed to have an apple with that but I got distracted.

Snack was some tortilla chips with salsa.

For lunch, I went to Liz’s in Warner Robins and got a vegetable plate: two servings of green beans, a serving of collards and a serving of lima beans, along with a piece of cornbread.

Had another snack later of one of my daughter’s applesauce pouches (she doesn’t know that daddy got one of ’em lol).

For dinner, my wife and I got vegetable egg foo young, along with some hot and sour soup, and the little lettuce salad with ginger dressing.

On the workout side of things, I went to the gym for about 1 hour 15 mins and did pure strength training (different kinds of push-ups and pull-ups). Didn’t finish, so I’m finishing up as I type. After that, it’s a homemade post-workout shake with dark chocolate, peanut butter, banana and coconut milk. High calories because I’m trying to gain some muscle.

  • Hey,
    Ya’ll still there?

I got well then my wife got what I had. Guess it’s good we took turns to be able to take care of each other. She has been in the bed for 4 days. It’s hit her hard. Maybe it is flu, don’t know.

So I got back on the program. I’m still slacking on the water rules. I did veggie blow outs a couple of days and half doses a couple of days I got a few one hour walks and today a 30 minute walk. I have been eating better than normal and don’t eat too bad anyway. I still haven’t jumped back on my cardio hike but the time is near.

I wish everyone a great week..
